Update on HR 4870, the Healthy School Meals Act.
Thanks to all of you for your overwelming support and hard work. The plant-based options pilot program from HR 4870, the Healthy School Meals Act was included in the House version of the child nutrition bill, and was approved by the Education & Labor Committee but has not yet been voted on by the full House of Representatives. This won’t happen until after they return from recess on September 14. The Senate also has a version of the child nutrition bill that was voted on and passed in August, without the pilot program. The House is currently looking for offsets to fund the House bill. Once the House passes its bill, the two bills will likely go to “conference” to reconcile the different versions of the bills.
Our outreach has recently focused on the Senate conference committee members to encourage them to keep the pilot in the final bill. PCRM staff had good meeting with Senate staff committee so they are feeling positive about the next steps if the bill goes to conference.

President's Welcome Message
Jai Jinendra.
I am pleased to recognize that the year 2010 will be one of the most memorable year for our community. In April, we started by having more than 100 kids and adults participated in cultural program to make the Mahavir Jayanti program a grand success.
In the month of May we donated $ 3,000 to DC kitchen. Nearly 50 youth and adult members served as volunteers to prepare and deliver vegetarian meal to 4000 hungry and needy people. We partnered with Montgomery county Humane Society in a mini project. Also we did 18 Abhishek and Bhaktamer Poojan in our temple with Shree Samirbhai Shah on May 8 & 9.
Our members are playing key roles in planning JAINA convention 2011, and actively pursuing federal legislation to insuring Healthy Plant based meals (HR-4870) in schools throughout USA.
On July 12 & 13, we did Panch Tirth Yatra and visited 5 temples in 2 buses. 93 members took advantage of this excellent opportunity. Thanks to Jatin Shah for his long time hard work to make this event possible (see more details in following pages).
Last but not least, the most important milestone happened in July. After working hard for last couple years, temple committee lead by Mr. Prakash Mehta acquired land for our new Jain Center with help of Ashok Shah (Globex realty) See more details in side.
Securing land at an ideal location is a first step to achieve our goal of Jain Authentic Center. However, the real work starts now, we need to work hard, and show your physical, mental and financial support. We will present the proposal for preliminary plan phase by phase for new Center during Swapna Ceremony.
Please let me or other EC members know how you will like to get involved. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome, please contact me at 703-946-4417 or write me at ashok.shah@fgould.com
Sincerely, Mr. Ashok Shah, President
